Pain Management

Description:
The goal of NCI's pain program is to address the physical and medical issues pertaining to pain control for the cancer patient. Pain Control, A Guide for People with Cancer, is the most comprehensive piece in the program. It contains basic information regarding the types and causes of cancer pain and the importance of communicating pain to the health care team. It discusses the three tiers of medicines for pain, as well as complementary methods used to control it. The booklet also addresses the impact of pain on the patient's emotional and spiritual health. A Spanish version of this booklet is available. Three additional pieces (one in Spanish) targeted to low literacy and underserved are populations are part of the series. A cancer pain video supplements the brochures for individuals who prefer this medium, as well as for cancer patient educators to use in their programs.

Partnering Opportunities:
The Office of Education and Special Initiatives would like to partner with organizations or health care professionals who are interested in helping us promote and disseminate the pain management series. In addition, those who would be willing to conduct evaluation efforts to determine effectiveness of the series would also be welcome.
